aslo is there a difference between a jailbreak and an unlock

Posting the link is illegal, so I will tell you to visit the iphone dev team site. The information is under your nose, but it’s going to require more research. Visit all methods on official sites for a good idea of what will work and what can go wrong.
I have experience developing and apple DOES try and mess up jailbreaking every few firmware updates, so what works in the past may be blocked later.

jailbreak = get cydia. Enables 3rd party apps.
unlock = only for iPhone. Enables the iPhone to be on any network.
iPT 3G is still tethered. Different story for iPhone 3G
